White Sea Bass

This is one if not my favorite. After seeing so many fish speared on video I know I speak for many spearos in saying that it is the freeswimming fish that really get my blood flowing. There are some great clips in here and some huge croakers. Not a smart fish and the diver is very calm and doesn’t spook them. A lot to learn here. Great stuff.

Another good one. This is pretty accurate for your typical WSB dive. If you see their tail and can use the kelp to block his eyes so he can’t see you and maneuver to get a shot on his spine you will be in good shape. This is what I would have done because the fish isn’t moving. If the fish was swimming, anticipate where he is going and be lined up and ready to pull the trigger when he comes out from behind the kelp. If you are already in position he won’t notice you hopefully because you are already lined up and movement will be minimal.

This one from Nils must have been shot before HD but the numbers of fish are impressive. I love the kelp rooms with a single fish just hanging there motionless.

By watching these videos and seeing how each fish reacts to the diver you can get a feel for that exact moment when you should pull the trigger. Most guns used are the size of a Riffe Island and rigged with a slip tip so you have plenty of power to reach out and touch them. If you have a fish that is sitting dead still don’t rush the shot but also don’t get greedy. Personally when I “aim” I shoot terribly. I am much better off with an instinctive shot, extend, point and shoot. If you wait too long you’ll think about it too much and then when the fish bolts you’ll take a wild one anyways.

Whats your favorite video you’ve found on White Sea Bass?

Trying to look at each species and determine what that tell tale sign for when he is going to turn is a trait that you always should be looking for.
Whether you hunt them or just drool over the videos, do you happen to notice any patterns with the way each fish turns?
Is there any tip off that you can see that tells you there are getting ready to go?
