I’ve been invited to go dive tomorrow with some buddies on the West Coast of Florida and started getting my gear together and can’t bring myself to bring my guns! I’m going to challenge everyone to chose one dive trip at their local spot or on a trip to bring only a pole spear.
Fact is all the fish you shoot with guns you can and will get with a Pole Spear if you put your mind to it. It will refresh your love for the sport and challenge you in ways you haven’t felt for years.
Using a Pole Spear makes you a better hunter, teaching you to relax and draw the fish in for a closer more personal shot.
You are more selective, more patient, your dives are longer and for the most part your shots are high percentage as you wait for a kill shot the way we all claim to hunt but in actuality all really should hunt.
I’m leaving my guns at home. I might not shoot anything and the other four guys will likely whip up on me with their longer range guns but I’m up for the challenge. I know we aren’t going to get any World Records or encounter anything monstrous so lets have some fun and make it a trip to remember.
I’ll let you know how it goes. If you think it is getting to easy to shoot Groupers and Hogfish or Calicos and White Seabass, or Stripers and Fluke, Amberjacks and Red Snapper.
With the limits on fish we are allowed to take dropping faster than the US economy I want to make a day of my diving and not limit out in 20 minutes. With a pole spear you’ll take a shot every dive if you want and can shoot anything and everything you set your sights on.
For a boost of excitement in your diving that you haven’t had in a while there is nothing like going back to basics and challenging yourself. After all, there are only so many times you can shoot the same fish over and over, video, take pics of and do it all over again before you start to wonder how to challenge yourself.
Here’s your chance. Pole Spear Challenge.

When was the last time you left your gun at home? What is your favorite fish to Pole Spear?
Whats the biggest fish you’ve been able to take with a Pole Spear?

  3. Biggest fish on a polespear – black grouper about 90 pound

  4. Day went well and we had a blast. The new Pole Spear was magic and I found that with a float line clipped off directly to the band I could shoot a hogfish and run the pole spear completely through him and put him on the float line and have him almost to the buoy by the time I hit the surface. With the pole spear we managed to land 4 of our 5 guys limit of Hogfish. I found plenty of Grouper under the ledges too and with the three prong or the single flopper could have taken them easily.
With the pole spear small fish can be speared and strung so quickly there is nothing better or faster I think for tournament fishing or getting the best fish out of a school before they all spook. I was doing quick dives today 1:10 down 1:10 on the surface all day and even in the current and 35-70′ depth was good all day.
Great times. Thanks Ed for the trip and all the guys that were there great to see you and dive together as always.
