Getting up early tomorrow to meet up with Spearing Magazine’s founder Chuck D.
We have it on good account that there have been some great conditions on the West Coast of Florida and are going to hit some secret spots and do some gear tests for the Magazine.
Chuck and his brother have been diving out here for ages and have one of the most enviable GPS books on the coast. Its the middle of the week and there shouldn’t be much boat traffic so hopefully we will have it to ourselves.
With the moon the way it is the tides should be favorable and with lots of bait around and the water changing… Cobia. I’ve got my fingers crossed it will be a big day with the pole spears front and center.
Again its been 3 weeks since I’ve been in the water so hopefully my workout plan and diet will have me hitting the depths comfortably and the Riffe Pole Spear will have a chance to do its dirty work.
I apologize if I’m out of action for the next two days… Time to dive. I’ll let you know how it goes and post a few pics as soon as my gills dry out a bit.
Gear for tomorrow:
2 Riffe Pole spears: 9 ft 3 piece and a 7 ft two piece. three prong, slip tip and flopper shaft
130 Euro with horizontal reel
Riffe Metal Tech Mach 5 if we get into the big Cuberas and need a longer shot…
3 mm Green Cryptic camo wetsuit
1mm black wetsuit bottoms so I can mix and match the wetsuits for the temperature as the day goes on.
100ft Armor Spectra
50/50 Armor spectra (50ft) attached to 50 ft bungey for Big pelagics if the Wahoo and 100lb AJ’s show up
Mask, snorkel, fins, booties, gloves, Terminator Knife, and new Riffe Weightbelt
We’ll be diving from 40-100+ feet so likely only using 4-7 lbs of weight. Usually I take a bit of weight off as the day goes on and the suits compress a bit so I’m not so negative.
Last but not least and possibly the most important:
Food
Trail Mix
10 bottles of water ( one for every hour of the day I plan on being on the water)
Pre-made Ceviche mix so that the first fish we get can be made into lunch. I mix onions, bell peppers, mutton pepper (It’s a Caymanian must have), salt, pepper, tomatoes, cilantro. All ready to go. All I have to do is hope Charlie shoots a fish and then cut into small pieces, add some limes, mix it all up, twiddle my thumbs for about thirty minutes then attack it with some tortilla chips and a bit of hot sauce.
Awesome.
Wake up is at 0500 so I’ve got my gear set, shades, big goofy hat, microfiber longsleeve shirt, backpack with towel and extra clothes and Salt Life loot, sunglasses, money…
Time to dive.
One Response to “Diving today? I’m on it”

I’m jealous. My gear for today:
1) suit
2) briefcase
3) paper
4) caselaw/statutes
I’m planning a 30 minute hearing in front of a judge.
