All right its your turn. The below email is in reference to the Black Grouper I landed a week or so ago. Apparently not everyone shares my enthusiasm for the catch and I am a bad person….
While I do have a witty and substantial argument to defend myself against the following email and accusations, I’d love to hear what you all have to say in response to the latest Hate Mail of the Week. I’ve got some Salt Life clothing and an Electric Hat for whoever gives me the best response.

Hi you jerk,
As a former commercial spearfisherman who once held the world record for meeting great white sharks while freediving, I must say that I am definitely NOT impressed by jou walking around all stiff-d!#$ after shooting that grouper. I would say that shooting a fish that is probably 100 years old falls in the same class as hunters who target moose. Why don’t you rather go out and spear a cow? It is d!#$heads like you who give all spearos a bad name. If your life’s ambition is to shoot a large fish rather go for any type of gamefish, but then, that would be difficult, not so? Targeting and landing a gamefish takes guts and skill, not so? I have lost count of the number of times I have freedived among even bigger groupers than the one that fell to your ego, and have never had the slightest inclination to shoot them.
May you be swallowed by a grouper one day.

Last time I checked Black groupers did not inhabit your part of the world. What in the heck does shooting a moose and shooting a big grouper have in common??? NOTHING>
Google is a great reference and I have read all about you Jerry. Your environmentalist attitude could be applauded however, as with most people like you, you lack the basic common sense. You seem to poke you nose into everything you shouldn’t. Don’t you have anything better to do than to take on an American dude? What are there not enough “issues” in your own country now you are trying to go international?
You of all people should know that spearfishing as the kind here is the best way to take fish. Why don’t you go tackle the illegal longliners of the world that is desimating the shark and bluefin tuna poplulations? Seems to me they do much more damage that this “lone ranger.”

Hi Jerry thanks you very much for writing me with your concerns. Congratulations on your world record achievement that not a single soul has heard about. Sounds like quite the accomplishment. Can you give me some numbers to the spots with the bigger groupers you are referring to? My ego still needs a little itching.

Wow Jerry, it def seems like you are treading in dangerous territory here.
You say you were a former commercial spearfisherman, right there you are admitting to being a criminal because the selling of speared fish is illegal in our country.
Furthermore, how on earth did you come up with the absolutely insane idea that you had a world record for great white encounters?
Am sure you were probably the only contestant in that competition because most of us in the Cape Town are choose to avoid and forget about our encounters.
The large grouper you might have swum with would more than likely have been the brindle bass and potato bass both of which are protected no take species in our home land so well done for not shooting them!
As far as I am aware the black grouper is a perfectly legal fish to be speared in the USA so I can’t see how your argument is justified. The USA has been applauded internationally for their fisheries management policies and its something which South Africa can take some inspiration from. If the black groper was in any way endangered am sure they would have put restrictions in place to stop the taking of the species.
In future, please don’t embaress your fellow country men by raving off like a lunatic when your hands are dirtier than most others.

I would shoot a moose, and I have thought of spearing a cow. My ego didn’t shoot the grouper, my Riffe speargun did. You should have seen him dying on the spear, it was pretty awesome. Thanks for reading the blog!
Jerry is such a nagger. Everything has gotta die at some – might as well be now. Cam probably did that old fish a favor by killing it. You know how many health problems a 100 year old fish has? Just like humans that old, old fish cant wait to die. Im gonna go out and strictly target 100 year old fish to make the ocean a better place.
a former commercial diver calling out a ligitimate recreational diver about his conservation.do not get and neithier do you.maybe you should check camerons portfolio on shooting “gamefish”as you called them.the conditions and difficulty in taking that fish is a remarkable.did you read the post or only look at the pictures? a little jealousy perhaps?sometimes people can be so heavenly minded they are no earthly good.
Is that the record for most white sharks encountered on one freedive or single encounters on multiple dives? And what exactly defines “meeting” a great white? Do you have to shake hands and let him introduce himself or can you just see one and get the hell out of the water? And what is the governing body that keeps those records because I would like to submit the record for meeting the most nurse sharks on a single breath hold after jumping into the aquarium at the atlantis hotel on a saturday.

Jerry is a pity that there are people like you I caught a black grouper a couple of weeks ago of 72.4 pounds and try to claim the world record, but someone fishing in those days one of 84 pounds and not succeed. but that’s why we are not criminals submarine fisherman, stop making stupid comments and live your life and do not go trying to smear the name of others.
