Kevin Piper passed away yesterday while diving in the Florida Keys with his family and friends. I only met Kevin on a few occasions in my trips to the Keys to hang out with the great crew of young spearos that live there but I am sure his friends will have some great stories and adventures to share to celebrate his life and remember him by.
Kevin was was Scuba Diving in 120 feet near Maryland Shoal on the Atlantic side of the Keys. His father was in the boat and another one of his friends was in the water with him but only freediving so he was on the surface watching when he saw Kevin rapidly ascending. He tried to slow him down but Kevin was already out of air and intent on air. When he hit the surface, he said, “I feel kind of funny..” and moments later he was unconscious.
This particular dive spot is near the deeper edge of the reef and drops off slowly before reaching the deeper water of the Gulf Stream.
Kevin’s father quickly jumped in the water to help him to the boat and once onboard they rushed to shore where he was flown to another medical facility on the mainland.
Sadly, Kevin passed away the next day in intensive care.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed but not forgotten. If any of you have any stories or pictures to share please too.
RIP Kevin
