Freedive Fiji
Location: Fiji Islands
Outlook for spearing in this region for the coming week:
As we expected the water has cooled to a comfortable 24-26 degrees around Fiji bringing plenty of good size Wahoo and sails along with large schools of bait fish. With the season in full swing now and a group of some great divers coming over in the first weeks of July, the month’s focus will be on chasing records and keeping the grey suits at bay.
Most of June was spent gamefishing around Vatulele and Beqa with the waters around Vatulele producing good numbers of fish ranging from 15 up to 45 kg. With every day seeing multiple hook-ups, and blistering runs there was never a dull day gamefishing for these speedsters. In between all the Wahoo bites, the odd sailfish were quick enough to grab a skip bait on the thread line gear making for some great arial displays on light tackle. We managed to release 4 fish proving to be a great early start to the winter season.
Mid-month some guys from Aus had called wanting to chase Wahoo on the guns, they had never seen Wahoo in the water before s o were super excited to get into some of the action. Arriving at the seamount our first drift produced a school of around 15-20 fish while working the flashers the leading fish came in too close and produced an easy broadside shot, taking advantage I let fly boated a nice Wahoo of 22 kg. The action continued throughout the day with the boys all landing their 1st Wahoo against the weather elements and seeing schools of over 50 fish.
The inshore reefs are still holding good numbers of Walu (Spanish Mackerel) with guys from WA experiencing some red hot action landing 6 fish up to 26.7 kg and loosing 2 to the tax collectors making for an exciting dive in the sheltered waters of the lagoon. The guys chasing something tasty are still finding their mark on the shallow bombies in Beqa Lagoon with plenty of Bluespot trout and Jobfish to take home for the table.
